Arthouse50: A Barbara Hammer Tribute

This program highlights a selection of experimental shorts by queer film legend Barbara Hammer (1939–2019), whose work The Roxie Theater has championed for decades. Shot at The Roxie, the beginning of Audience (1982) features Hammer’s impromptu and often flirtatious questions posed to audience members gathered in line before her first tribute screening as part of the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Hammer foregrounded her relationship to the women’s movement and the lesbian community. Sisters! (1973) brings together rare footage of the first Women’s International Day march in San Francisco and the second National Lesbian Conference at UCLA. The spirit of revolution continues in the playful Superdyke (1975) in which Hammer and an army of women take over San Francisco. Sync Touch (1980) puts forward the connection between touch and sight as the basis for what Hammer considered to be a new lesbian aesthetic in cinema. (Lex Sloan/Tanya Zimbardo)
