Re:Vision: The Dislocation of Amber

In The Dislocation of Amber, director Hussein Shariffe uses abandoned areas of the Sudanese city of Suakin to stage abstracted, ambiguous performances. His actors move through corners, windows, doorways like shadows of this once thriving port, now fallen to ruin. Lacerating sunshine and intense color dominate the frame, while musician Abdel-Aziz Dawoud chants the words of the Sufi poem “The Wine Ode” by Ibn Al-Faridh. Shariffe himself said this about Suakin in 1974 — “Only faint traces of its ancient affluence are apparent today … a dimmed reflection in a cracked mirror; empty eyes with the stars in a different house, laughter in another room”.
